Bar Grants Military Waiver of Dues
I was very grateful to receive a letter earlier this summer from the
State Bar informing me that, because I am deployed as a Catholic
chaplain in Kirkuk, Iraq, on active duty with the Air Force Reserve, I
was being granted a military waiver from State Bar dues for fiscal year
2005. This was a complete, but very pleasant, surprise, and I just
wanted to thank the State Bar for this consideration.
As a chaplain serving both Air Force and Army troops here in Iraq, I
can attest that gestures like this make a tremendous difference in troop
morale, giving the troops confidence that their efforts are acknowledged
and appreciated.
Fortunately, I should not be requesting a similar waiver next year,
since my tour of duty here is about to come to an end, and I'll be
returning to my civilian parish in Ketchikan, Alaska.
Thank you, once again, for this kindness and for all your efforts on
behalf of the State Bar membership.

Online Articles Serve the Public
I am using the August 2004 issue on abuse and neglect in long-term
care facilities as class reading for my undergraduate course,
"Introduction to Nursing Homes," here at the University of Iowa. Thanks,
too, for the heads-up to watch for a related article in the October
issue. The fact that your magazine is online and available to the public
is indeed a wonderful service. Thank you, and keep up the good work!

Kudos to Wisconsin Lawyer Authors
Countless times, the Wisconsin Lawyer has provided me with
very informative and useful articles; personally, I prefer it to its
Minnesota counterpart. I have passed along issues to an appreciative
local colleague. Recently, I was very pleased to hear the Wisconsin
Lawyer positively mentioned at a well-attended course for criminal
law practitioners in Minnesota, by a panelist who is a fellow
nonresident Wisconsin lawyer. Kudos to all who contribute to such a fine
product!
