President's Perspective
Unbroken Chain of Leadership
by Leonard L. Loeb
In campaigning for office, reference was made to
the strong chain of State Bar past presidents and how I hoped to be a
link in that great chain. Susan Steingass's link was forged of true
steel; my successors, Gary Bakke and Gerald Mowris, display every
indication of well-tempered metal.
The new administration started during a crucial
time in July 1999 with the resignation of Steve Smay and ends with a
modicum of equanimity with George Brown as new executive director, after
settling into the new headquarters. We really have entered into "A
New Millennium, A New Building, A New Beginning."

A statement of gratitude is necessary:
The Life Planning 2000 program will be used as a model for national
replication. The basis for its resounding success is due to Jim Jaeger's
indefatigable efforts.
Our fiscal pilot, John Macy, steered a true course in financial
waters to bring us to the shore of financial stability.
Frank Gimbel did a superb job in heading the Executive Director
Search Committee.
Jim Friedman guided the Board of Governors expertly.
Gary Bakke's handling of the challenges facing BAPR is without
parallel - and portends his effective administration.
Tom Shriner headed the task force regarding multidisciplinary
practice most efficaciously.
Bob Elliot chaired the "Rules of Negotiation" Committee with
diligence.
The Executive Committee consisting of James D. Friedman, Gary L.
Bakke, James M. Brennan, Burneatta L. Bridge, Thomas S. Hornig, James A.
Jaeger, and Susan R. Steingass, consistently sought consensus rather
than choosing sides, thus forging a strong link in the chain of
leadership.
Last, for the purpose of emphasis, my sincere and total gratitude is
given to the State Bar's professional managers and staff who are no
doubt the best group of bar professionals that could be assembled in any
state. They have proven their metal through devoted efforts that make
any president look great. I am beholden to each staff member and their
leaders: Geoff McCloskey, Pat Kelly, Joyce Hastings, Gene Gosewehr, Katy
Duren, George Brown, Betty Braden, and Linda Barth.
My sincere thanks to each State Bar member who provided me with the
privilege and opportunity to serve as State Bar president in the new
millennium. With thanks!
Auf wiedersehen, au revoir, arrivederci, ciao, adios, do zobaczenia,
ziemir gezunt, sla'n, and farewell.
